It Is Better to Receive than to Give

Both of the leading candidates for Governor of New Jersey in the upcoming election, Democrat Phil Murphy and Republican Kim Guadagno, have released their tax returns to the public. And, the local newspaper noticed, neither of them chose to contribute $1 of their state taxes to the Gubernatorial Election Fund, which provides matching funds for candidates’ campaigns. Participating does not change a taxpayer’s liability or reduce any refund they have coming. Maybe Murphy and Guadagno have a philosophical objection to taxpayer funding of their campaigns? Apparently not: Murphy received $9.3 million from the fund, and Guadagno received $3.3 million. (RC/Trenton Times) ...Imagine that: politicians who think everyone else should pay, but not themselves.
Story Update: Murphy won the election.
