All 18 alligators at The Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., beat a recent cold snap. Because they need to breathe air, if gators detect their pond will freeze over, they’ll hold their snouts out of the water “at just the right moment,” says park manager George Howard, so they can still breathe once the water surface freezes. Similar to hibernation, reptiles can go into brumation, and resume their normal activities when conditions are more favorable.
