Other Things You Don’t Discuss
On a Friday afternoon, business partners Christopher Smith and Jay Warren posted on the Facebook page for their restaurant, Cup It Up American Grill in Tucson, Ariz. The post included their support for President Donald Trump and repealing Obamacare. It also expressed opposition to “fake news” and global warming as a scientific theory, and said the restaurant would no longer broadcast NFL games while players were allowed to kneel during the national anthem. The post prompted an immediate backlash on social media, including calls to boycott the restaurant — and threatening phone calls. Operating partner and chef Julian Alarcon resigned, along with several other employees over the weekend, though there were no violent incidents. By Monday, the restaurant had closed indefinitely. In a statement released on Saturday, the pair apologized. “We assumed there would be some discussion and shares,” the statement said. “But never this type of animosity and hostility.” (MS/Arizona Daily Star) ...Because those types of posts never cause a reaction on Facebook.Original Publication Date: 22 October 2017
