In nearly 11 years as a pharmacist for Walgreens in California’s Silicon Valley, Kim Thien Le filled 745,355 prescriptions, and was promoted to pharmacy manager. The only problem: Le never completed pharmacy school, never had a license, and made numerous mistakes in dispensing drugs. The license number she provided to Walgreens actually belonged to someone else with a similar name, and the company apparently never asked for a copy. When investigators from the California Board of Pharmacy asked her to prove her qualifications and license, Le, who was apparently on maternity leave, promised not to return to work as a pharmacist and told them, “me and my son would be very grateful if you could just forget about this.” No chance: Le could be charged with around 750,000 crimes, and the California Board of Pharmacy has recommended that the licenses of the several Walgreens stores where she worked be revoked for not doing their due diligence in verifying Le’s qualifications.
