Safety First

Following a recent wave of stabbings by Palestinians, the Israeli Army is equipping its soldiers with new “knife-proof” jackets. So Yaniv Montakyo, a vice president of the company producing the vests, took to Israeli TV to demonstrate the vests’ effectiveness. He asked Eitam Lachover of Israel’s Channel 1 to don the jacket so Montakyo could stab him several times. According to Mantakyo, an early recording was successful. In a subsequent taping, though, Montakyo said he knifed Lachover in a section where there wasn’t any protective material and Lachover was stabbed in the back. Lachover was discharged from the hospital after receiving stitches, and a spokeswoman for Israel’s state broadcaster said the report would be broadcast despite the mishap.
