Short Eyes
Police were called to a hotel in Moore, Okla., to do a welfare check on a teen-aged boy — his girlfriend had followed him there and was worried about him. When officers arrived at the specified room, they smelled marijuana; the man who answered the door said he was alone — no teen-aged boy. Police had enough cause to insist, and sure enough the 17-year-old was there. Investigators found the man and the boy had exchanged text messages: the man allegedly had hired the boy for sex. The man called the teen “baby boy,” and was pleased when the boy called him “daddy.” The boy’s identity is being withheld as a juvenile victim. The man is identified as State Sen. Ralph Shortey, 35, a “law and order” Republican who established his conservative bona fides by noting he was a missionary to Uganda. “I actually planned my life around being a missionary,” he once told a reporter. Storey, who is married and has three children, is charged with engaging in child prostitution, engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church, and transporting a minor for prostitution.
