Slow Down

Paul Mosley was stopped by a La Paz County, Ariz., sheriff’s deputy, whose report says Mosley had been swerving around traffic at 97 mph. That was, the deputy said, a criminal speed. But Mosley wasn’t arrested: as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, he’s protected from arrest when the legislature is in session. “I go 130, 140, 120,” he told the deputy — and it would be a waste of law enforcement time to cite him. The deputy referred the matter to the county attorney, who passed it to another county to avoid “even the appearance of impropriety.” The Cochise County attorney wouldn’t say whether Mosley would be charged, but Mosley will face judgment one way or another this year: he’s up for reelection, and apologized on Facebook. “My jokes about frequently driving over 100 miles per hour ... were entirely inappropriate,” he said.
