Snakes on the PlainsAfter a tip, police in Argentina intercepted a bus. Passengers complained that a man “came onboard with 40 snakes, plus what he had in the boxes” in the luggage area, said Santa Fe province ranger Daniel Chersich. Officers “were terrified of opening the bags.” Sure enough, Chersich says all told, the man was transporting more than 444 live boa constrictors, vipers and other snakes; 186 endangered tortoises; 40 lizards, and an armadillo. The unnamed man had collected the menagerie after spending three months in the wilds of Santiago del Estero province, and was arrested for smuggling. (RC/AFP) ...Those considering getting into the lucrative reptile-smuggling business should consider that it takes three months and keeping 600 animals alive to get to the level of traveling by bus.
