Tortoise vs Hare

While investigating another incident, Jefferson County, Ala., Sheriff’s deputies were informed of a stolen flatbed truck. The deputies spotted the truck and gave chase. The truck went onto the interstate and the deputies continued the chase — at 25-30 mph. Why so slow? According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian, the thief couldn’t get the truck out of first gear. Before too long, the truck’s transmission seized, and Randy Vert, 29, was removed from the truck and arrested. He’s charged with first-degree theft of property, reckless endangerment, attempting to elude, and resisting arrest. “Thank God he couldn’t find second gear,” Christian said: the pursuit could have gotten all the way up to 35 mph. (MS/Birmingham News) ...At which point the bicycle officers wouldn’t have been able to keep up.
