Warning Signs

Atchison County (Kan.) Sheriff’s deputies arrested Carol S. Fowler, 48, at her home in Huron on a warrant for failure to appear at a court appearance on charges of being drunk in public, and resisting arrest. Fowler didn’t go quietly: she “began kicking, hitting and scratching at deputies,” Sheriff Jack Laurie said, and deputies had to subdue her with a Taser; two misdemeanor counts of battery on law enforcement officers were added to the arrest charges. For her mug shot, a screaming Fowler was held by her hair by a jail deputy. Days later, still in jail, Fowler still hadn’t settled down: they say she bit a corrections officer’s thumb so hard, she broke the bone; a sheriff’s deputy who came to the officer’s aid was also injured. Fowler now faces new charges of felony battery on law enforcement officers. Last fall, Fowler was elected to the Huron City Council, with just two write-in votes; Huron has about 73 residents.
