What’s the Mistake?

Playtime was approaching for an 8-year-old girl at John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary School in St. Paul, Minn., and she put down her backpack. It went thud. She looked inside and discovered that her mother’s gun had somehow ended up there, and told her teacher right away. As police investigated, the girl was allowed to go home with her mother, but principal Lisa Gruenewald sent parents a letter with an ominous warning: “There are consequences for students in situations like this.” (AC/St. Paul Pioneer Press) ...Would there have been any consequences if she had hidden the gun ’til she got home?
