Zero Tolerance — It’s Not Just for Students Anymore

When John Haynes, an eighth-grade math teacher at Selby Lane School in Atherton, Calif., couldn’t get students to pay attention, he lifted a desk a few inches off the floor and dropped it. That got students’ attention — including one girl who ran out of the room and called 911 because the noise “scared” her. When police arrived, all was calm in the classroom, and students were paying attention. “It wasn’t a teacher out of control,” said police Sgt. Tim Lynch, adding Haynes hadn’t thrown anything. Still, school officials suspended Haynes from teaching, even though it was the first time anyone made a complaint against the “excellent teacher,” because of the “nature of the complaint.” (RC/Palo Alto Daily News) ...Hey, teachers: do you still support ZT?
