“That’s another thing that causes crime: the destruction of the family,” lectured U.S. District Court Judge Rudoph T. Randa to a man in his Milwaukee, Wisc., courtroom. “All the sociologists will tell you that.” Randa, who has been rebuked before by Appeals Courts for his sentencing comments, was addressing Sean Patrick, who among other things owes 10 women more than $146,000 for the support of his 12 children. “How do you satisfy 10 women?” Judge Randa demanded. “I can’t even satisfy my wife.” Patrick’s friends, in court to support him, couldn’t contain their laughter at the comment, and Randa proceeded to the sentence: 30 years in prison, to run consecutive to the 20 years Patrick is serving in an earlier murder case.
