Between legal medical marijuana and newly legalized recreational pot sales in Colorado and Washington, sales figures show that Americans spent $5.4 billion on legal weed in 2015. That’s enough to have sent “the New Horizons probe to Pluto, the Curiosity rover to Mars, and had enough money left over to purchase the entire output of the Cheesecake Factory for a year,” the Washington Post reports. On the other hand, it’s estimated that illegal marijuana sales in the U.S. are in the $15-20 billion range.
