The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says that 2,600 drug cases could be at risk after a crime lab chemist in Pensacola, who was supposed to be analyzing the drugs brought in as evidence, had been stealing many of the pills over the past eight years. The Department warns that a “massive investigation” may turn up even more cases. “The quantities are large,” said FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey, but the exact number will take awhile to determine because “the chemist has lawyered up.” Joseph Graves, 32, who was a supervisor in the crime lab, has resigned — and has been arrested. Investigators aren’t sure if Graves was taking the pills, or selling them. (RC/Orlando Sentinel) ...Either way, he knew for sure which pills were the “good” ones.
Story Update: After further investigation, Graves was indicted on 32 counts of drug trafficking, but in September 2016 he ended up pleading guilty to just one charge: racketeering. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison plus 15 years of probation. Meanwhile, many of the charges against others backed by his “work” had to be dropped.
