It’s High Time

“Right now people are smoking marijuana secretly,” says David Englin. “They’re spending money on it and [that money is] going into the hands of criminals.” Therefore, the Virginia legislator has introduced a bill to legalize pot, and sell it in the state stores that now sell alcoholic beverages “to fund core services for the Commonwealth.” The bill, designated as (wait for it!) House Joint Resolution 140, faces tough opposition. Marijuana “needs to be controlled,” insists Wayne Frith, Executive Director of Substance Abuse Free Environment. “I mean what’s next? Selling it at Walmart?” (RC/WTKR Norfolk) ...Well no, not until it can be supplied by China.
Story Update: Virginia didn’t decriminalize recreational marijuana until 2020, and in 2021 made it legal for adults to possess up to one ounce ...but did not get a mechanism in place to make it legal to buy it in the state. That’s expected in 2024.
