Mighty Maos

The statue was 121 feet tall, painted gold, and honored Mao Zedong, the late founder and dictator of the People’s Republic of China, who is famous among other things for the bloody Cultural Revolution. And the People’s Republic of China took it down when it became world-famous from a series of photographs showing it sticking out in the countryside. Apparently the statue, located in Henan, hadn’t gotten government approval. (AC/AFP) ...Which makes destroying it the perfect way to give Mao all the honor he deserves.
