On Point

“A Slidell Police officer was monitoring traffic,” said a detective for the Louisiana town. “The officer stated he looked in his rear view mirror and observed [a vehicle] veer off the roadway and head straight for his ... police vehicle.” The officer estimates the car was going 40 mph when it crashed into him. The officer noticed the driver was looking down before the crash, and asked the driver what was distracting him. The driver, Ronald Ceplina, 32, didn’t want to answer — but officers found a used syringe in the car. “It is speculated that Ceplina was distracted due to the fact that he was injecting heroin at the time of the crash,” the detective said. Ceplina was charged with careless driving, driving with a suspended license, not wearing a seat belt, possession of narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia. (RC/WWL New Orleans) ...On a positive note, the driver won’t need any pain meds from the medics.
