Stupid Is as Drunk Does

A 17-year-old boy crashed into a tree in Kinnelon, N.J. He was returning to a house where he’d been drinking, police say, after dropping off a couple of other kids. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, underage possession and consumption of alcohol, and several motor vehicle violations. Police also charged Mark Gaw, 55, with a disorderly persons offense since the party was at his house. Gaw insists he didn’t provide any alcohol, and said the alleged drinking occurred when he had left his house for a few hours to pick up his son. “Whatever was going on stopped the moment I came home,” he said. Gaw is on a local committee to research ways to create a new law that would authorize police to enforce underage drinking laws on private property. “It’s a bit of an irony that a person who volunteered to be on such a committee is charged with such a thing,” an investigator said.
