Valuing Families
When Amaya Scheer, 11, joined her family, she brought her things with her in a trash bag. Later, her new siblings did the same — and one of her fathers recalled having done it, too. So Rob Chasteen-Scheer launched a charity, Comfort Cases. “We provide nice new bags and backpacks for kids to travel with as they move around,” Amaya says. “Amaya’s story about her efforts to help kids in foster care is a perfect example of how one young girl is making a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” said a spokeswoman for American Girl magazine, which published a piece on her and her family. The magazine is being targeted for protest unsubscriptions by a group called One Million Moms. 1MM says that by writing about a girl with two fathers, the magazine is “pushing the homosexual agenda to children” that could require parents to have a “premature conversation” about gay people with their children. Amaya’s father Reece Scheer says that because of the protest, he told his daughter, “There are some people out there that don’t agree with our family so you might hear something.” (AC/WTOP Washington) ...Would you rather tell your kids that other kids have two fathers who love them, or that they have One Million Moms attacking their family?Original Publication Date: 06 December 2015
