Why Kids Hate Math

During a math test, an unidentified 9-year-old boy at Patterson Elementary School in Fremont, Calif., asked his teacher for help on a question. In response, teacher Frederick Berg, 58, allegedly slapped the boy on the face, twice, in front of the other students. The boy cried for the rest of the class time, and then told his father what happened when he picked him up from school. Berg, who has been placed on administrative leave while police investigate, said he thought the boy had “put a decimal in the wrong place on purpose to mock” him. The boy’s father said that teachers, including Berg, have repeatedly praised the boy as “super-smart for his age.” (RC/San Francisco Chronicle) ...While Berg sounds super-dumb for his age.
