Listen to Disco, Save a Life

When doing CPR, the American Heart Association recommends 100 chest compressions per minute, but most people do them much too slowly. To get trainees into the rhythm, Dr. David Matlock of the University of Illinois medical school in Peoria has students listen to the appropriately titled Bee Gees tune “Stayin’ Alive”, and then imagine the song in their heads later when doing compressions. Sure enough, according to his study, to be presented to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the students pumped much faster when thinking about the song, averaging 109–113 beats per minute. …Of course, Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” is even more appropriate.

Q: Why would I want to pay more than the minimum rate?

A: To support the publication to help it thrive and stay online: this kind of support means less future need for price increases (and smaller increases when they do happen), which enables more people to upgrade. This option was requested by existing Premium subscribers.
